Stating that surgical intervention is the first method that comes to mind in obesity treatment lately, Akçakaya said, “Obesity surgery should be the last stage of treatment, that is, the last resort.”
Recording that the incidence of obesity, defined by the World Health Organization as “abnormal or excessive fat accumulation in the body that impairs health”, is increasing day by day, Prof. Dr. Adem Akçakaya said, “In addition to behavioral therapy aimed at changing the individual’s lifestyle on the basis of strategies developed against the disease, he recommends diet therapy, exercise and, as a last resort, surgical treatment. In other words, the patient must first change his/her lifestyle, diet and exercise, and if none of them provide the desired benefit, then obesity surgery should be applied. In addition, the suitability of obesity surgery for the patient’s conditions should also be examined.”
“Don’t worry about your health while trying to lose weight quickly”
“The effect of methods other than surgical treatment on weight loss is slow. That’s why many obese patients prefer obesity surgery methods to lose weight quickly. However, these methods bring with them many complications, especially weight regain, tachycardia, fistula, bleeding, herniation, anastomotic stenosis, gastric erosion, small bowel obstructions, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.”
“There is no standard weight loss method”
“The risks and side effects of the method to be chosen in obesity treatment should be discussed with the patient. Because there is no standard “Slimming Method” that can be applied to everyone regarding obesity. Every individual should be evaluated in every aspect and weight loss treatment should be started after all processes are phased.”
“Changing lifestyle should be the main goal”
“Changing lifestyle is the main goal of all treatment methods. Successful weight loss can be achieved by gradual treatment, changing meals and food amounts, exercise and increasing calorie expenditure. In case of failure, pharmaceutical drugs and endoscopic methods are applied. If no results are obtained and the patient is morbidly obese, surgical methods should be preferred. Which surgical method should be chosen varies from person to person and should be determined according to accompanying comorbidities.”
“There is no patient who cannot lose weight, losing weight just takes time.”
“The risks and side effects of the chosen method should be discussed with the patient, and recommendations should be given to the patient after a multidisciplinary evaluation. Treatment should be started with the most appropriate and least risky method for the patient’s current condition. A detailed evaluation should be made to ensure the compliance of the person, the deficiencies should be determined and the treatment plan should be made accordingly, the patient should be reassured that there is no patient who cannot lose weight with the stepwise method, and it should be explained that losing weight will most likely be achieved with one of these methods, but the important thing is to maintain weight loss through behavioral changes. There is no patient who cannot lose weight, losing weight just takes time. Providing this assurance will increase patient compliance and success.”
