Noting that gingival growth can be seen on the front teeth, especially in patients with nasal problems and mouth breathing, Periodontology Specialist Dr. Lecturer. Prof. Dr. Kübra Güler stated that after the treatment, if there is a growth appearance, aesthetic operations are performed on the gums and the excess in the gums are removed.
Gingival growths may be due to a lack of inflammatory cleaning
Describing gingival enlargement as ‘the condition of the gum being larger, more protruding, more bleeding than its normal state’, Periodontology Specialist Dr. Lect. Member Kübra Güler said, “Gingival enlargement may be drug-related. Some medications used can cause gum enlargement. In addition, gingival growths may also be due to a lack of inflammatory cleansing. Especially in patients with nasal problems and mouth breathing, gingival growth can be seen on the front teeth. It occurs because the tissue is constantly dry and some people may have regional gingival growths.”
“Inflammatory growths tend to bleed”
Stating that regional gingival growths usually occur with irritant factors, Periodontology Specialist Dr. Lect. Member Kübra Güler said, “For example, there is a small tartar and this causes a regional gingival growth in that part. Inflammatory growths tend to bleed in few places. Drug-related growths are harder.”
Noting that gingival growths are conditions that make cleaning difficult, Periodontology Specialist Dr. Lect. Member Kübra Güler said, “The more the gums grow, the more things accumulate in them. Thus, it negatively affects the person’s ability to maintain oral hygiene and causes them to be unable to maintain it.”
How is it treated?
Periodontology Specialist Dr. Lect. Member Kübra Güler explained the treatment of gingival growth as follows:
“In these areas, if a very effective care in terms of oral care has not been provided and there is an accumulation of tartar, tartar cleaning is performed first. Necessary oral care recommendations are made to the patient. With these, gingival growths will decrease considerably. When the gum is completely recovered and becomes non-bleeding, if there is a remaining growth appearance, aesthetic operations are performed on the gum with the necessary procedures and the excess in the gum is removed. Afterwards, as long as the person maintains oral care, gingival growth is not seen again. In drug-induced growths, it does not heal completely unless the drug used is discontinued. No matter how much the necessary treatments are done, these growths may increase as long as the medication is not stopped. Therefore, the medication can be changed in consultation with the physician. After stopping the medication, the growths may stop for a period of 2-4 weeks.”
